Air-sealing

People should *never* insulate without air-sealing (or ensuring the home is well-sealed from the attic).

Change my mind.

In the home performance industry, we call them “blow & go” contractors — contractors that swoop in, blow a pile of insulation into the middle of the attic, get their $thousands and leave before anyone checks their work. These images show what doesn’t get done: No air-sealing of wall cavities and attic-to-house penetrations; no verifying the depth & distribution of the insulation; no safety inspection. Air moves through insulation if there’s no hard barrier to block the airflow.

An independent home energy audit lays out a workscope based on what each home needs. After the work is done, the auditor comes back to double-check it and verify that the homeowners got what they paid for.

Stop throwing away money; make a plan to have it done right.
